
Some of their RS232 modules can actually be put into what they called "bitbang" mode which bypasses the UART and lets you use the adapter as a general purpose 8bit bi-directional bus. They are well documented their website has datasheets, utilities, firmware, sample code, etc. There's an old Vista driver for an adapter that used this chip (had something to do with a GPS) that works reliably on 7, despite it being years older than the current release (which always gives me a "device cannot start" error on 7 圆4).įTDI makes excellent USB-Serial ICs, and their chips are also used in these types of adapters.

I've had problems with PL-2302 based adapters (which is probably the chip you're referring to, it's very common).
